William Morgan

d. 1839
  • Marriage*: William Morgan married Nancy Ann Franks in December 1823.1
  • Death*: William Morgan died in 1839.2
  • Burial*: He is buried in the Gavers, Columbiana Co, Ohio.3
  • Comment: He was quite well to do. The Morgans were a patriotic family whose males fought in every war. They looked down on Quakers for refusing to bear arms.1
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: From Guy Raymond Ewing (as quoted in Fife): I think the Morgans with Nancy’s approval covered up the fact that Samuel Ewing, IV was the son of a Quaker. When I interviewed my grandfather, John Otis Ewing, in the 1940s, he simply did not know his grandfather’s first name. I located Wills and Estates of Ohio before 1850 by Carol Bell, C.G. at the Wisconsin State Historical Society. It listed the Estate of a Samuel Ewing, Columbiana County, 1822. The County Courthouse, Lisbon, had no records of estates that far back. I wrote to the Mormons and they sent me copies of six pages about the Estate Sale (Sept 1822) and a commission appointed in 1823 “to care for the legal affairs of Margaret Ewing (3) and Samuel (1).”.

  • Jane Dennon was the daughter of Joseph Dennon.1
  • Marriage*: Jane Dennon married James Ewing Jr, son of James Ewing and Eleanor (?).1
  • Death*: Jane Dennon died in 1835.1
  • Land Sold*: On 17 December 1803, James Ewing Jr and his wife, Jane, sold 44 acres of land, that had been purchased from Nathan Stockman in 1801, to Philip Lefeber for £150. Jane Ewing signed with an “X”. This land was adjacent to “other land of James Ewing", land from the “estate of Joseph Drennon the father of Jane Drennon”.
  • Comment: In the 17 February 1846 Survivor Pension Application (#R3412, which was rejected) made by Jane Dennon's sons, David B. and Jessie Ewing, they stated that their father James Ewing died 24 Feb 1843 at the age of about 93. They also stated that James Ewing’s brother, Henry Ewing, had been killed at the Battle of Trenton, N.J., that James served several terms and that his wife, Jane, died in 1835.1,2
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: From information about the 1803 sale of land by James and Jane (Dennon) Ewing, Fife concludes: "[The] wife of [James Ewing] was Jane Drennon NOT Jane McLaughlin as has been given in two Genealogical reports. Jane McLaughlin was the daughter of William McLaughlin and Michael McLaughlin was her brother not her father. Jane McLaughlin is identified in Chapter XXXIX [of Ewing in America]. She was a niece of Margaret Patterson, wife of William Ewing who died 1814 in
Little Britain twp. Lancaster Co., PA. Jane McLauglin’s mother was Elizabeth Patterson McLaughlin."1,3
