This means that she is NOT a sister of Joseph Walker but rather a sister of his wife and cousin, Mary Walker. This, in turn, brings into question which of the "brothers and sisters" of Joseph cited in his Will come from his families and which come from his wife's family.3

  • Birth*: Samuel Ewing was born between 1785 and 1790.1,2,3,4,5,6
  • He was the son of Samuel Ewing and Mary Oldham.
  • Marriage*: Samuel Ewing married Nancy Ann Franks on 21 July 1818 at Columbiana Co, Ohio.1,7,8,9
  • Death*: Samuel Ewing died in August 1822 at Augusta Township, Columbiana Co, Ohio, while lifting a hugh stone in raising a barn.10,11,1,12
  • Census: Samuel Ewing.13 was living at home with his parents in Fayette Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1800; Samuel Ewin Sen; 2 males 10<>15, 1 male 45<; 2 females 10<>15, 2 females 16<>25, 1 female 45<
  • Residence*: Samuel Ewing lived in 1817 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co, Pennsylvania. Perhaps he met his future wife, Nancy Ann Franks, in Philadelphia.14
  • Census*: Samuel and Nancy Ann Franks lived in an unknown place , an unknown place , in 1820. Living at home with them was/were their child(ren) Margaret; Samuel Ewing, one male “45 or older”. That could be “26-45" if the census taker checked the wrong column. One female between “26-45" that was Nancy Ann. And, one female “under 5" that was baby Margaret, born 1820.8
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Census Profiling implies that he left home before the 1810 Census. Since he was married in 1818, this implies he left for some other reason than because he married. There was a Samuel Ewing living near his family at the time of the 1800 Census who was possibly a cousin. This other Samuel Ewing does not appear in the 1810 Census. Perhaps he "linked up" with this other Samuel Ewing and together they moved West eventually settling in Ohio.3
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Birth date has been established through Census Profiling. It differs from the date (c 1781) given by Fife, McCalmont and Guy Raymond Ewing Jr.12,11,3,1
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Fife says: "In the Wisconsin State Historical Society, Madison, I found the Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy. Samuel Ewing, III belonged to the Darby MM where he received a membership certificate on 27 Jan 1781. Darby MM transferred Samuel to the New Garden MM in Columbiana County, Ohio on 26 November 1818." This MIGHT be pertinent to this Samuel Ewing were he borm in 1781 as claimed by Fife and McCalmont. But, census profiling says this Samuel Ewing was gorn 1785-1790. This needs to be sorted out. B.T.W., the shift to an MM in Columbiana Co in Nov 1818 is consistent with Samuel Ewing having married in Columbiana Co in Jul 1818. However ... "Then something happened. The Quakers found out that Samuel was married in July 1818. The New Garden MM took a stern action. Samuel Ewing 'was disowned for getting married contrary to discipline.8'"
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Guy Raymond Ewing Jr gives marriage date as 1 Jul rather than 21 Jul (as given in all other sources). This may just be a typo.12

  • Married Name: As of after 1820,her married name was McGregor.1,2,3
  • Census*: Mary Ewing lived in Fayette Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1850. Living at home with her was/were her child(ren) an unknown person ; Dwelling 24, Family 25; Real Estate Value ; Mary Ewing, Widow, farmer, 60; Sarah Norris - 25, Allexander Beady -1.
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Census Profiling indicates that she was still living at home in 1820 (at age 30). It also indicates that she was a Widow in 1850 living with Sarah Norris (25) and Allexander [sic] Brady (1). In the 1850 Census, she's living near a 52 year old Samuel Ewing who appears to be a Widower living with several children: Ester (26), James (19), Caroline (16) and Mary (12). It's possible that this Samuel Ewing is the same as a Samuel Ewing living near Mary (Oldham) Ewing in 1820. Neither of these Samuel's has yet been "fit into the picture" (or have been captured in the database).3
