  • Birth*: William Ewing was born circa 1706/7 at Ireland.2,3,4
  • He was the son of James Ewing and Anne (?).
  • Marriage*: William Ewing married Jane Gordon, daughter of James Gordon and Agness Douglas, in 1750.4
  • Death*: William Ewing died on 30 November 1774 at Tyrone Township, Adams (then Cumberland) Co, Pennsylvania, day/month date of death comes from James G. Ewing.2,3,4
  • Probate*: His Will was recorded on 5 December 1774 at Tyrone Township, Adams (then Cumberland) Co, Pennsylvania.4
  • Emigration*: He emigrated before 1729 to Chester Township, Delaware Co, Pennsylvania.4
  • Comment: He appears on the Tax Rolls for East Nottingham Township for 1729-1748. Then he appears on the 1754 Tax Roll for Londonderry Township (formed from East Nottingham). Then he appears briefly in records for Oxford Township. He's finally on records for Pennsboro Township, Cumberland Co, Pennsylvania, as of 1761.4
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Fife indicates (page 123) that William (c1707 - 1774) is a child (number VII) of Alexander (c1694 - b1752). This is in conflict with Fife's discussions in Chapters XV, XXXIX and XXXXI in which she consistently talks about William and Alexander being brothers. It's assumed that the "son relationship" indicated on page 123 of Fife is a mistake.5
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: This Alexander, referred to as "Jr." and "the Younger," was an older brother to John, Henry, Samuel and, possibly, Thomas. It is believed that there was another brother whose baptism was never recorded. He was William Ewing who appears on the same East Nottingham Township, Chester County Tax Lists from 1729 until he appears in Londonderry Township, Chester County prior to his moving, it is believed, to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. There was also a sister Ester Ewing baptized in the same Church to James Ewing of Inch Island on 24 May 1697. According to Joseph B. Jameson she married James Cowden on 16 June 1724 (probably in Ireland), James Cowden signed the Administration Bond of Alexander Ewing in East Nottingham Township, Chester, and also of John Ewing who died in 1754 in East Nottingham Township, Chester County. His Administration Bond was also signed by wife, Anne, and John Ewing (believed to be his brother not his son although he had one) and John Hawthorn.6

  • Birth*: Alexander Ewing was born in 1737 at Nottingham Township, Chester Co, Pennsylvania, Whether the birth place was East or West Nottingham is not defined. As new townships were being formed frequently, boundaries were not definite.1,2,3,4,5
  • He was the son of John Ewing and Rachel (?).
  • Marriage*: Alexander Ewing married Frances Ewing, daughter of Henry Ewing and Jane Allen, on 7 January 1768 at (now), Oxford Township, Chester Co, Pennsylvania, Rev. John Cuthbertson, Covenanter from Ireland, recorded in his diary that he “married Alexander Ewing and Frances Ewing on 7 January 1768 at Henry Ewing, Esq." (It is under “Middle Octoraro Society” listing in the Diary.).1,2
  • Death*: Alexander Ewing died before 3 September 1829 at Mt Pleasant Township, Adams (then York) Co, Pennsylvania.6,7
  • Moved: Before 1750, his parents, John Ewing and Rachel (?), moved to Mt Pleasant Township, Adams (then York) Co, Pennsylvania. Alexander Ewing, however, remained in Chester Co with relatives, maybe having been "bound out to trade," and did not move to York Co until 1771/2.1,8
  • Land Purchased: Circa 1763, Alexander Ewing purchased land in (now), Oxford Township, Chester Co, Pennsylvania. Alexander purchased 130 acres from John Graham who had obtained it on 4 Jan 1744. The land was next to land obtained by an Alexander Ewing in 1736 and subsequently patented to David Watt in 1784. David Watt had married Alexander's second cousin, Jane Ewing, a daughter of James s/o Old Uncle Henry Ewing. The land to the North of James Graham was, later, purchased by Thomas Ewing possibly youngest son of Alexander Ewing died 1752/3. It bordered land of David Watt, Sr. and of William Edmeston. The land of James Ewing, eldest brother of Frances (Ewing) Ewing was nearby as was the land of her father, Henry Ewing, Sr.9,10
  • Comment: Alexander is probably the "Alexander Ewing" who appears on the 1765 Tax Roll of Oxford Township, Chester Co, Pennsylvania with 130 acres.10
  • Moved*: Between 1771 and 1772, Alexander Ewing and Frances Ewing moved to Mt Pleasant Township, Adams (then York) Co, Pennsylvania. The move of Alexander and Francis (Ewing) Ewing to the Mt Pleasant Township area by 1771 is implied by their daughter, Mary, having been baptised by Rev. John Cuthbertson with his diary noting the baptism under a "Lower Chanceford Society" listing.2,10
  • Will: Alexander Ewing witnessed the will of his father-in-law Henry Ewing in 1772 at Oxford Township, Chester Co, Pennsylvania; The Will was witnessed by Alexander Ewing (presumed to be his son-in-law) and Thomas Ewing (presumed to be Alexander's youngest son). No wife is mentioned. "Henry Ewing Senr. of the township of Oxford, and County of Chester being in perfect health and mind and memory ... I give demise and dispose of in the manner following, VIZ: To my son, James, the Plantation he now lives on and £1 in cash. The land I now hold, if undivided at my decease to be divided equally between sons Henry and John. Henry to have over and above all the houses I now possess on his part of the Plantation. Henry to be equal sharer with John in building him a log house 22 feet by 18 feet with a stone chimney and a barn 20 feet by 16 feet anywhere the said John pleases on his own share of the place. Unto my daughter Catherine, 10 shillings, to my daughter Martha £5, to my daughter Eleanor £5, to my daughter Esther £5. To daughter Margaret £20 paid within two years in three or four different Gales [?] according to her needs and according to my sons Henry and John their abilities to pay within said specified time, also to her a bed and furniture and choice of one cow. To daughter Frances £5. To sons Henry and John all real estate and movables etc. My eager desire is that legatees in their dividends may have no connection with the present civil Law [not clear as to what is meant], I order and appoint James McKnight and George Mitchell uardians and to act if necessary as umpire if two of themselves cannot agree." /witnessed/Thomas Ewing, Alexander Ewing /s/ Henry Ewing, Senior [SEAL].11,12,13,14,15
  • Misc: Unlike their brother Samuel, Alexander Ewing, Robert Ewing and Isaac Ewing did not serve during the Revolutionary War but rather paid their fine.2,16
  • Will-Filed: Alexander Ewing swore to the signing of the will of his father-in-law Henry Ewing on 7 January 1782 at Chester Co, Pennsylvania, (“Appeared Thomas and Alexander Ewing who swore they saw Henry Ewing sign his last Will and Testament.").15,17,18
  • Census*: Alexander's 1790 census cites five males <16. Mary (#1), Rebecca, and Mary (#2), however, do not appear in this census.19
  • Land Sold: After Alexander Ewing died (intestate), the interests in his land by his then living children were transfered to his son Alexander through a deed dated 3 Sep 1829. York Co, Pennsylvania, Deed 3-Z-268/9 dated 3 Sep 1829 states that: "On 3 Dec 1829 Thomas Ewing et al sold to Alexander Ewing ... land that had been purchased on 13 April 1771". The sellers had lived on the land before the Deed was executed. Thomas et al is specified to be: "Thomas Ewing, Eleanor Ewing, Martha Strawbridge, James Ewing and Nancy his wife, Henry Ewing and Ann his wife, Thomas Ewing and Rebecca his wife, John Ewing and Ann his wife all of the 1st part”. The Deed further specifies: “And, whereas Bennoi Sterrett and Mary his wife conveyed to Alexander Ewing a tract of land in Fawn twp., 155 acres and Alexander Ewing afterwards obtained a Patent from the land Office for 104 acres and 55 perches and died intestate do sell the land to Alexander Ewing for £50 to him in hand paid by the following ...”. The names of the sellers are then repeated and their signatures are witnessed. The separate signings are dated: Thomas, 3 Dec 1829; Martha Strawbridge 11 Feb. 1835; Henry Ewing 14 Feb 1835; John Ewing 31 May 1834; Eleanor Ewing and James Ewing on 15 Jan 1840 (or perhaps 1848; the handwriting is not clear). The Deed was not recorded until 8 Dec 1854.19

Evidences of the EWING Family in York Co., PA until 1850 printed by the York Co. Historical Society gave us other information about this couple.20
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Fife indicates (on page 140) that Alexander bought land in 1763 that was next to William Edmeston and Thmas Ewing (which Thomas had purchased in 1771). She hypothesizes that: "Thomas is, I believe, the youngest son of Alexander Ewing who died 1752 in East Nottingham twp. Chester Co. He [Thomas] would have been ... Alexander’s Uncle though, maybe, younger than his nephew!"21
