  • Census: Mary Agnes Ewing was living at home with her parents in (Temperanceville Post Office) Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1870; Dwelling 57, Family 57; Real Estate Value 20000, Personal Estate Value 1000; Jas H Ewing, Farmer, 38; Jane W (Keeping House) - 40, S E (At Home, attending school) - 15, S W (attending school) - 12, L Jane (attending school) - 10, Carolin J (attending school) - 8, M W (attending school) - 6, M A - 4, E B - 1.3
  • ParentsDeath: When Mary Agnes's parents - James Harvey Ewing and Jane Woods - died from typhoid fever in 1875, many of their children were taken in by aunts and uncles but some were taken in by families from the Montour Presbyterian Church. Jane Woods and Sarah (McCurdy) Riddle had been 'best buddies', and Mary Agnes was taken in (but never officially adopted) by the Riddle family, becoming the 'sister' of her future husband - George Washington Riddle - when she was ~9 years old and he was ~16.
  • Comment: At the Montour Presbyterian Church, Mary A. Ewing was in the "Busy Bees" Sabbath School Class in the Summers of 1875, 1877 and 1879. In 1879, she was the class monitor and her attendance was 16/17. She was subsequently in the "Busy Bee" class led by Mrs. Deemer. Her attendance was 22/22.4
  • Comment: Hugh M. Scott was the guardian of Mary Agnes Ewing from 1875 to 1881. His first and final accounting was filed in Jun 1881.2

  • Comment: Some time between 1881 and 1887 she purchased an organ.2
  • Moved*: In 1892, the Riddle family, including Mary Agnes Ewing, moved to Chartiers (then Crafton) Borough, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania.2
  • Comment: In January 1898, George Washington Riddle moved his family, including his mother, to Pocomoke City, Somerset County, Maryland. The move was evidently prompted by the deteriorating environment in Pittsburgh (because of the pollution from the steel mills). He purchased a farm in the Pocomoke City area at the time of his move.2,6
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: According to their marriage certificate, George W. Riddle and Mary Agnes Ewing were married at Forbes and Craig Streets in Pittsburgh. As of mid-2000, there was no church at this location; in addition to various stores, this is the location of the (newer) part of the Carnegie Museum. It's possible they were married in a private ceremony at the minister's home.7

  • Comment: In January 1898, George Washington Riddle moved his family, including his mother, to Pocomoke City, Somerset County, Maryland. The move was evidently prompted by the deteriorating environment in Pittsburgh (because of the pollution from the steel mills). He purchased a farm in the Pocomoke City area at the time of his move.2,7

It's uncertain where they first settled, but by Oct 1909 they had moved to Langhorne, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
