  • LegalDocument*: William Ewing elected to take his father's property at the valuation on 21 June 1842 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (directed to pay the other heirs of his father James Ewing their equal and proportionate shares within twelve months).20
  • Will*: William Ewing prepared a Will on 20 June 1845 at Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (Abstract: Sound mind and memory. Son David: land on which he lives adjoining lands with Charles Hayan and Wm Henderson on south and southwest and on north by a conditional line, including the mill and all the improvements. Son James: land on which he lives joining land with Hugh Quin and Maxel Huey's heirs on south and southeast and on north by a conditional line; one bed & bedding. Son William: that part of father's land joining lands on the south with sons David and James by the conditional line and on the north by a conditional line; father's house with furniture; cattle, farming utensils and grain in the ground. Daughters Mary and Hannah each: $400, bed and bedding, one share in Pittsburgh & Steubenville Turnpike Road Company. David to pay four yearly payments of $100 and James and William to pay two yearly payments of $100. Nephew William Harvey Ewing "the north part of the tract of land on which I now live including a saw mill" joining on the north by lands of Wm Simpson and others and on the south by conditional line. Son John deceased. Special: "Larding" machine and fulling apparatus to be sold; Legatees had already agreed upon the conditional lines. Executors: Samuel Riddle, David Ewing, James Ewing and William Ewing. Disputes to be decided by friends: Josiah Guy and Andrew Johnson, both of Finley Township. Witnesses: Samuel Riddle and William Gribben.).21
  • Will-Filed*: His Will was filed on 29 August 1845 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (WB Vol. 6, pg. 63, No. 47).21
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Riddle cites a son, John, of William and Elizabeth (Kirkpatrick) Ewing who died before 1845. Ardinger cites an unnamed Ewing, b. 1789, d. 1829. The data concerning these two people have been merged.1,5
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: William Ewing s/o James Ewing, in his will written Jun 1845 and filed Aug 1845, bequeathed his nephew William Harvey Ewing “the north part of the tract of land on which I now live including a saw mill”. This may have been because William Ewing’s 1841 petition for partitioning the land of James Ewing failed to identify William Harvey Ewing as s/o Samuel J. Ewing resulting in William Harvey Ewing not receiving “his due”. Alternatively, it may be because William Harvey Ewing had, by the time the Will was written, moved in and he considered him an "heir".21,19,22
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The History of Allegheny Co says that William Ewing s/o James Ewing "... came to what is now [1890] Ewing's Mill, Moon and Robinson townships, and purchased six hundred acres on both sides of Montour Creek." However, his father's will (written in 1814 but not filed until after his death twelve years later) gives William this land saying that it was owned by James Ewing, his father, by patent. Patent maps for the area, however, do not show his father holding any patents along Montours Creek. This may have been a side effect of both Virginia and Pennsylvania granting warrants, and James/William may have had to purchase the land from someone else who had a claim to the land. This might be supported by a 20 Apr 1835 letter in Riddle’s files. It is unknown who the letter was addressed to; the upper-left quarter of the letter is missing and this is the part that indicates its addressee. The letter was sent by J. Mitchell, Esq., and says “is not recorded … accident it should be lost or mislaid &c would … title for thy farm – and I know where said deed is … think it would be best to come forward and settle thy accounts with me and get the deed in thy own pofsefsion as soon as pofsible”. The letter might be connected with a plot of land farther south on Montours Creek; patent maps show William holding land there as Executor. All of this needs to be sorted out before it is totally certain that the William Ewing of Ewing's Mill is really the son of Squire James (rather than a William Ewing who moved into the area and possibly lived farther down Montours). Until then it's assumed he is the son. (This assumption is, by the way, confirmed by material in the Ewing Archival Material compiled by Madjesia Ewing.).15,7,23,24,25
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The 1841 petition by William Ewing s/o James Ewing for partition of his father's land fails to identify William Harvey Ewing s/o William's brother Samuel Ewing. But William Ewing's later Will gives land to his nephew William Harvey Ewing. It's possible/probable that William Ewing's bequest of land to William Harvey Ewing was done to correct the failure to include William Harvey Ewing in the land partitioning. alternatively, when the Will was prepared, William Harvey Ewing was living in the William Ewing family and he may have been considered an heir.21,19,22
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: McCandless' records identify an Elizabeth and a Wm. Ewing buried next to each other in Lot A-76 with (presumably death) dates of 1813 and 1815, respectively; these data are repeated in Riddle's Cemetery Compilation. But McCandless' A-76 Lot Sheet also indicates that "these dates were taken from the old map” and work with her records indicate that the “old map” may have recorded dates related to lot purchase and perpetual-care payments. Riddle's personal reading of the cemetery contains records of the inscriptions for these two graves that identify them as William and Elizabeth (Kirkpatrick) Ewing.8,9,10
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The 1790 census shows two William Ewing's in Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania. However, it's been assumed that William is included in the 1790 census record for his father, James. Note, however, that William's first sons - John, David and - do not show up in the 1790 James Ewing census record.11
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The census records for 1820-1840 indicate several non-family members living in the William and Elizabeth (Kirkpatrick) Ewing Household. One in 1840 appears to be a nephew, William Harvey Ewing s/o William's brother Samuel. The others are unknown: 1820, 1 Female 26<>45 and 1 Male 10<>15; 1830, 1 Male 30<>39, 2 Females 30<>39, 1 Female 10<>15; 1840, 1 Male 10<>14 in 1840. These may have been orphaned or widowed relatives. alternatively, they could have been farm hands.2
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Census records for 1790-1820 imply that William and Elizabeth (Kirkpatrick) Ewing had two sons who died in infancy, as teenagers or as young adults. One was born before 1790; the second was born between 1790 and 1800. One (assumed to be the first) died between 1800 and 1810; the other (assumed to be the second) died between 1810 and 1820.2
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Census records consistently show the Elizabeth and William Riddle family living next to Hewey/Hughy/Huey families. In addition the Huey plot is next to the Riddle plot. Finally, the patriarch of the Huey family named William Ewing as an Executor of his Will. This all indicates "ties" between these families. One implication is that the Jane A. Hoey Noble who married William Ewing (1810-1875) - s/o Elizabeth and William Riddle - may have "come from" this family in some way.2,26
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Both Riddle and Ardinger cite 1 Dec 1771 as the birth date. This is confirmed by by Corson/Wooley in Our Ewing Heritage (pg. 809). Census profiling, however, indicates that the birth date range is 1761/1765. The census profiling needs to be re-investigated.1,5,2,3
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Census profiling indicates that William, the first son of James and Mary (McKown) Ewing, was born in 1761. This is consistent with records that say he was a landowner in the 1790 census. It is also consistent with the History of Allegheny Co saying: "He died aged eighty five years." [He would have been 73 had be been born in 1771.] But it means that William was a son of James by a first, previously unrecorded, wife. Further research is needed. Added 20 Sep 2006: Carson/Wooley Our Ewing Heritage, pg. 809, shows date as ca 1771 and mother as Mary McGown. This pretty much destroys the idea that he was born a decade earlier via a previous marriage.2,7,22,3
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Ardinger cites a daughter Jane b. 1819/1820, d. after 1850 and m. to John Stevenson. "Jane" is not mentioned in William Ewing's Will; his Will does mention "Hannah" and her name in many genealogical material is "Hannah Jane". James Gilbert Ewing indicates that the Will of Samuel Ewing (1751-1805) cites both Jean Peggy as daughters. The History of Allegheny Co indicates that the Stevenson family resided in Moon Township. Therefore, I have made her the "daughter Jane" mentioned in the Will prepared by a Samuel Ewing who lived in Moon Township and who died 1805. [This Samuel Ewing appears to have settled in the area about the same time as Squire James Ewing. They were first cousins. The mention, in Samuel Ewing's Will, of "James Ewing" as contingent Executor probably refers to his brother rather than his cousin.] Added 22 Sep 2006: James G. Ewing cites daughter Jean.1,7,27,21,28

  • Census*: Elizabeth and William Ewing lived in Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1840. Living at home with them was/were their child(ren) William, William and Hannah; William Ewing; 1 Male 10<>14, 1 Male 20<>29, 1 Male 30<>39, 1 Male 70<>79, 1 Female 20<>29, 1 Female 70<>79.13,2
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Riddle cites a son, John, of William and Elizabeth (Kirkpatrick) Ewing who died before 1845. Ardinger cites an unnamed Ewing, b. 1789, d. 1829. The data concerning these two people have been merged.1,7
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Riddle cites ~1765 as date of birth. Ardinger cites "about 1773". Riddle's date is better since: 1) Ardinger's would mean she was married before the age of 16, 2) it is consistent with her being aged 77 at her death (as indicated in cemetery records), and 3) her husband William's will was written Jun 1845 and does not mention his wife. In addition ... census profiling indicates a birth range of 1766/1770. So ... ~1766 is used as the date of birth since it is closest to satisfying all these data.1,7,14,2
Riddle's personal reading of the cemetery contains records of the inscriptions for these two graves that identify them as William and Elizabeth (Kirkpatrick) Ewing.5,15,8
Hoey Noble who married William Ewing (1810-1875) - s/o Elizabeth and William Riddle - may have "come from" this family in some way.2,16

Ewing on 25 March 1844 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, ("Martha Ewing (one of the heirs)", "John Cubbage in right of his wife as one of the heirs", "Nancy Ewing widow", "Joseph P Stewart for his wife", "Rev Alex Ewing one of heirs", "A. Jefferey Guardian, Ebenezer Ewing, Grandson", "Martha E. Haigh late Martha Ewing").19
  • LegalDocument: Robert Emberson Murdock (as surviving Executor) filed a Supplemental Administration Account for the estate of Alexander K. Ewing on 19 June 1848 (“Joseph P. Haigh & wife late Martha Ewing”, “A. Jeffrey guardian of Ebenezer Ewing”, “expenses of J. Ewing”, “Mrs Ann Murdock’s share of Estate”, “James Ewing’s share of Estate”, “Nancy Ewing … widow … the interest the principle due at her death”, “Mrs Martha Haigh”, “Mrs Ann Murdock”, “Mrs Eliza Cubbage heirs”, “Mrs Mary Stewart”, “Ebenezer Ewing”, “James Ewing (heirs)”, “Rev Alexander Ewing”).
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Ardinger says that Alexander K. Ewing had ten children but cites only nine. His conclusion may have come from the fact that Riddle cites a 10th child named William L. Subsequent research, however shows that the William L. mentioned in Riddle’s cemetery-reading notes is actually a McFadden in an adjacent lot (A-78) belonging to Macwire/McFadden; the absence of a last name on the tombstone led to the incorrect assumption that the William was a Ewing.1,2,20,21
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Alexander K. Ewing is presumably buried in Lot A-177 at the Montour Church Cemetery, but none of the sources about this cemetery cite a grave for him. However, here are four unmarked graves just north of his wife’s grave in Lot A-117 and he may be interred in this area.22,21
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Census profiling implies a son for Alexander K. and Martha (Larimore) Ewing who was born 1795/1800. It's assumed that he was named William since that name is not used for any of the other sons. It's also assumed that he's the "William Ewing" referred to in the tombstone for Hannah Ewing "consort of William Ewing" in Lot A-79.5 in the Montour cemetery.3
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Census profiling implies a son - Ewing - for Alexander K. and Martha (Larimore) Ewing who was born 1811/1820 and died (in infancy or as a teenager) before 1830.3
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Carson/Wooley's compilation of birth/marriage information indicates that "Annie" was born ca 1775 in Caroline Co, Maryland, and that Alexander, Samuel, Mary, James and John were all born in Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, 3 Aug 1773, 2 Nov 1775, 1777, 1785 and ~1786, respectively. This implies all sorts of birth date conclusions implied by the order of names in Squire Jame's Will and Census Profiling. The birth order and dates need to be sorted out.23
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The Will prepared by James Ewing h/o Mary McKown refers to "oldest son William", "second son Samuel", "third son Alexander", "fourth son James" and "fifth son John". Other documents concerning his estate also list the sons in this order. But the birth dates usually quoted for Alexander (3 Aug 1773) and Samuel (24 Nov 1775) make Alexander the second son and Samuel the third son. These apparently come from Carson and Mooley. However, an analysis of the census data from 1800 through 1850 for the Alexander and Martha (Larimore) Ewing family group indicates that Alexander was born in 1775. A similar analysis for the Samuel and Letitia (McCurdy) Ewing family has not yet been done. Nonetheless, the birth dates for Alexander and Samuel have been swapped. Only the year has been recorded until further information can be found. Added 20 Sep 2006: BUT ... This is inconsistent with the data that appear on pg. 842 in Carson/Wooley. Further work is needed.24,25,3,26,27

Riddle's reading of the tombstone gives an inscription "... departed this life August 16 AD 18?1 aged 67 years. Census profiling implies 1776-1780 as the date range for her birth. • Birth*: Elizabeth Ewing was born in 1777 at Cecil Co, Maryland/Virginia.1,2,3
  • She was the daughter of James Ewing and Mary McKown.
  • Marriage*: Elizabeth Ewing married Mark Kelso, son of George Kelso and Jane Kerr, in 1795 (Beers' Commemorative History does not cite Jane Kelso as a daughter; Riddle and Ardinger do. Ardinger gives the his source as: M. H. Borland, Sr in 1908 to be read at the Kelso reunion, McNay's Grove, Boyce Station, "Bill Blackstock, Data compiled from Borland Manuscript and other sources," Borland Manuscript, Copied 1920, 1947 and again in 1998 by Thomas G. Kelso.).1,2,4
  • Burial*: Elizabeth Ewing is buried in the Robinson Run Cemetery, McDonald Township, Washington Co, Pennsylvania.1
  • Death*: She died on 18 August 1819 at Mt Pleasant Township, Washington Co, Pennsylvania.1,2,3
  • GenName: Elizabeth Ewing is referred to as 'Martha Ewing' in some records.4
  • Census: Elizabeth Ewing was living at home with her parents in Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1790; James Ewings; 2 Males 0<>15, 4 Males 16<; 5 Females; 3 slaves.5
  • Married Name: As of 1795,her married name was Kelso.1,2,4
  • Comment: "... in 1818 [he moved] to Washington Co with his parents. The family settled on the farm now [~1890] owned by J. R. Kelso, where George M. grew to manhood."4
  • LegalDocument: The descendants of Elizabeth Ewing are discussed in a petition for partition of land owned by his father James Ewing filed by William Ewing at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (land description includes “being a piece of land purchased from John Cascadon by James Ewing, Dec, after he had made his Will of his other Estates”; descendancy information: 1st) “William Ewing eldest son”, 2nd) “Samuel Ewing since deceased leaving ifsue James since deceased leaving ifsue Samuel, Margaret Letitia. Nancy, [space left here, possibly for a missing name] Hugh, John. Samuel and Andrew. Mary married to David McKee and Elizabeth Married to George Shearer also Lettecia widow of the said James Ewing”, 3rd) “Alexander Ewing since deceased leaving a widow Nancy and ifsue James Ewing John L. Ewing since deceased leaving ifsue Alexander and William, Andrew (‘Andrew’ struck out). Ann married to Emberson Murdock, Eliza Jean married to John Cubbage and Martha”, 4th) “James Ewing since decd leaving a widow Rebecca and ifsue Jane. Sarah. James. Mary, Elizabeth. Martha. Letetica, and Esther married to John Gregg”, 8th) “Ann married to Maj Isaac Walker”, and 9th) “Mary married to John Fryer”).6
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The Will prepared by James Ewing h/o Mary McKown implies that the birth order of his daughters was Esther, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary. This order consistently appears in other documents concerning James Ewing’s estate. This implies that the birth dates for Esther and Elizabeth are possibly in error.
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Some sources cite 1789-1795 as the date range for her marriage. However, she was only 15 at the beginning of this date range. It's assumed that she was married at the end of this range (when she was 18).
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Beers' Commemorative History does not cite Jane Kelso as a daughter of Mark and Elizabeth (Ewing) Kelso; both Riddle and Ardinger do. Ardinger gives his source as: M. Kelso.

  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Riddle cites the birth date as 1779.This would lead to him being ~50 at the birth of his second child, John. In addition it is inconsistent with the census profiles.2,3
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Ardinger cites 1829 as the date of death. Riddle's records indicate that both of his children were minors in 1841; this comes from the statement to this effect in the land 1841 land partition document. No 1830 census record can be found for this family group. This implies that Ardinger's date of death is correct. It also implies that his children were born before/in 1829. But, on the other hand, Eric Ewing says he died 23 Oct 1863 in Hanover, Beaver Co, Pennsylvania. Eric Ewing's death date is used, but all of this needs to be sorted out.1,2,5
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The 1850 census record for Stephan Woods implies that Elizabeth Walker married him after the death of her first husband, John P. Ewing. An "Elizabeth" is listed as Stephan's wife, and Margaret and John Ewing, children of John P. and Elizabeth (Walker) Ewing, appear in the census record. In addition, Stephan Woods appears in the 1860 census record for John Ewing (s/o John P. Ewing). However ... other records imply that Stephan's wife had first been married to an Alexander Ewing. It remains to sort out the previous marriage(s) of Stephan's wife. Until then, it's assumed that the Margaret and John Ewing listed in the 1850 census record are the children of John P. and Elizabeth (Walker) Ewing but that Stephan's wife is someone other than their mother.
The birth order and dates need to be sorted out.12
