15. Joshua Ewing-[22] 29 (John10, John of Carnashannagh1) was born about 1733 30 and died on 4 Dec 1810 in Bath Co., VA 30 about age 77.

Death Notes: Will was dated 1804, probated April 1811 Bath Co., VA land actually located in present-day Pocahontas Co., WV on the Greenbrier River. Joshua was in the 1758 Frederick Co., VA militia. [Letter 17 June 1994 from Jean McClure. See file: John Ewing (1648-1745).
Joshua died 4 Dec 1810, aged 77, and is buried in the cemetery he willed from his land in the Little Levels at Locust Creek on the west side of the Greenbrier River. [e-mail 12-9-05 from Jean McClure. File: Joshua Ewing.] Birth calculation 1810-77 = 1733.

Comment: 25 March 1785, Peter Mather petitioned the court on behalf of Thomas Ewing, the eldest son and heir at law of John Ewing. If Thomas is the oldest, he would have probably been born about 1731 based on Joshua being born about 1733. Jim McMichael

Burial Notes: Joshua is buried in the cemetery he willed from his land in the Little Levels at Locust Creek on the west side of the Greeenbrier River.

Noted events in his life were:

1. Parents. Joshua Ewing was my five times removed Granddaddy. Perhaps born in Pa. in the 1730s or 1749s. I have heard that his Daddy's name was John and that he died early in life and that Joshua spent his growing up years as a stepson of his Daddy's Brother on a farm on the Jackson River in what became Bath C., Va.

2. Will: 1804, Bath county, VA. Joshua names his wife and children in his will.
Click To Will

3. Cemetery: 1810.67 68 69 Joshua willed one acre of land to be used for a cemetery.
"... I Joshua Ewing fellow citizen in the little levels of Bath County in the state of Virginia...I give an bequeath to my wife Elonor Ewing one hundred and one acres of land to be legally runn off of the upper end of ____ ____ I now live on joining John Colans (one acre of this reserved for the public for a burying you) and after the death of me and my wife this hundred acres ...." [Photo copy of will and extracted copy.]

Joshua Ewing ... settled in Greenbrier River Valley late 1700s. This is a remote country of high altitude and short growing season which contributed to the Ewing family departure in very early 1800s. Some to Vinton Co., Ohio, others to Kentucky and Tennessee. I have found nothing on any of Joshua's sons save Moses. I have visited the Joshua homestead and located the Burial ground of his will. This Pocahontas Co., WV remains a remote and sparsely populated area. [Information from Edward A. Ewing, 1995.]
I sent Connie Metheny of the Bath Co., VA Historical Society my email address. She responded with some important information. Connie has gone to court, along with the Taylors, in an attempt to get the cemetery fenced that my Joshua Ewing willed for public burial on the Greenbrier R. in Pocahontas Co. The cemetery is now fenced and cattle and horses no longer run through it. A preliminary survey by Connie and the Taylors brought to light a stone deep in the sod with only a foot or less exposed. This stone faces the river in the area where the earliest burials were made. It reads: J.E. died 4 Dec 1810 aged 77 years. Connie feels this is Joshua Ewing's stone and so do I. [From e-mail date 22 Jan 1999 from Jean McClure.]

4. Residence.70 Joshua is referred to as living on Locust Creek. It is believed that Joshua was closely relatd to our William Ewing, Sr., meaning Rebecca would be a second cousin.

It came to said Sumner from his father, Benjamin, who in turn received it from his father, Hon. John Smith Ewing, the third child of Indian John Ewing. The little record is a curiosity, and Sumner Ewing says it was for a long time lost under his father's house where it had slipped between the pieces of punched on flooring.
"It is a homemade book and at present contains about a dozen leaves or 24 pages, some of which are worn or torn, and it looks as if some might be entirely missing. The size is per the following ..." (And here A.E. drew the outline of the book, indicating ragged edges, torn corners and all. It measures 6 inches wide and 4 inches deep. The upper left hand corner seems to have been nibbled at by mice.)
"It is about 1/4 inch think [thick], cover and leaves. The cover is as thick as the leaves, and looks as if it were a piece of homemade cowhide, a bootleg, or a piece of saddle. Who knows but it may be a remnant of Indian John's leather breeches?"
Exactly when the book came into being no one can say. But we do know when it came into use - 20 Jan 1786. John himself recorded the date of the first entry on Page 2, which was, as has been noted, his and Ann's birth dates and places, and on Page 4, their wedding date. On Pages 4 and 5, John recorded the particulars pertaining to his children then born, ending with "Ann Ewing, Jun, born May the 27th, 1785."
On subsequent pages the rest of the children are listed, with their birth dates, but in a different hand. On later pages John Smith took over and his family is recorded as Indian John's was.
I do not know where the book is now. Sumner Ewing died childless (in Stockton, California) and the most likely person to have it, Barbara Ewing Powell of Newman, California knows nothing of it. It probably went the way of many such treasures, but thank heaven for A.E.'s almost-Xerox copy. It is a valuable piece of family history. Without it, a lot of Ewings might have been lost to posterity - or to this recorder at least.
At some date after John Smith died, some member of the family set down in the little book the date of his death as 26 June 1837. John's will is dated 16 May 1838. The will was proved 16 October 1838, and the inventory entered 27 November 1838.
