GEORGE EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      William-James


          When George was born, Bath County, Virginia was Pocahontas County. George was born 21 January 1807. His death came, attributed to "Palsy," when he was 76 years, 2 months and 18 days old - 1 May 1882 in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. He was buried in the Ewington Cemetery.

          Rosanna KNOX and George were married in Gallia County on the 5th of August 1827. Rosanna - called Ann on several records, was born 18 February 1806 in Ohio. She was the daughter of William and Eliz. (BUTLER) KNOX of Gallipolis. Rosanna was of the KNOX and REED families, related to the Honorable Whitelaw REED, U. S. Ambassador to England in 1906.

          George was a farmer, cooper and blacksmith. He also laid out the town of Ewington in 1852. In 1880, Ewington had a population of 85.

          In the 1850 census, George was a farmer $1,500. Lucinda HAWK, age 6 and Sarah EWING, age 12 were living with them. In 1860, he was still farming, $2,000/800. With them were, Lucinda HAWK, 16, a domestic and George MC MILLIN, 11, born in Ohio. In 1870, they had Mariah CONNER, 10 born in Virginia, "adopted."

          Rosanna died 22 November 1879 in Ewington and was buried in the Ewington Cemetery under the name of "Ann". George married again the 1st of October 1880 to a Mrs. Mary E. DENNEY. Mary was born in Pennsylvania on 20 October 1829. She died 22 August 1890, 61 year, 10 months, 2 days according to the Gallia County records.

          In the 1880 census, George was living with his son Gilbert - the records said that George was 63 years old, but it should have been 73. - "at leisure." The 1890 census has widow DENNEY living in Huntington Township with sons Leander and Alonzo DENNEY, twins, 8 and Cecil L. DENNEY, 5.

21-1         WILLIAM KNOX EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      George-William-James


          William Knox was born 24 August 1828 in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. He married Mary "Polly" VIERS on 1 October 1849. "Polly" was born 17 July 1825 in Huntington Township, Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio and was the daughter of John and Lydia/Lucy VIERS. She was the sister of Elizabeth who married a THOMAS and John who married Rebecca .

          William was 22 year old and a mechanic in 1850. The newlyweds were living with his parents, the George EWINGS. During the 1860 census, the family was living in Huntington Township, and William was a carpenter, $2,200/150. In 1874 they had 120 acres in Section 3.

          William died 11 July 1876 of T.B. and was Buried in the Ewington Cemetery. The 1880 census showed the widow living in Huntington Township with two children.

          "Polly" died 5 May 1898 at Niles Station and was buried with William Knox in the Ewington Cemetery.

                        3.    Anselm H. EWING, b. 10 Dec 1856, Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. Married: 3 July 1887, Gallia County, Rachel WILCOX. Moved to Washington State shortly after marriage lived in Falls City or Puget Sound. Occupation: Teacher

                        4.    Myrtle Belle EWING, b. 10 Oct 1859, Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio, d. about 1875-1879 (late teens) of T.B.

                        5.    William Ellis EWING, b. 16 Sept 1962, Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. 1880: 17 at home, remained single. College, Lebanon, Ohio. Resided: Puget Sound, Washington, teacher.

21-1-6      ANISE VICTORIA EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      William-Geroge-William-James


          Anise was born on the 23rd of July 1965 in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. She was married to Eliza A. GLENN on 29 April 1888 in Gallia County. Eliza was born 27 July 1860 and was the son of Franklin and Samantha (HOWE) GLENN. Anise and Eliza were VIERS first cousins, once removed.

          Eliza was known to have been a well-to-do farmer and fruit grower. They resided in Springfield Township in the 1900 census.

          Eliza died 19 December 1920 and was buried in the Fairview/Long Cemetery, Springfield Township. Anise died 25 October 1933 and was buried with her husband.

21-1-6-1          HARRY MC KINLEY GLENN

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Anise-William-George-William-James


          Harry was born in Bidwell, Springfield Township, 10 November 1891. His wife, Anna Mae WHITE was born 13 October 1900. They were married on the 3rd of May in 1934.

          Harry was a laborer and the family resided in Highland County, Ohio for awhile. But they were living in Vinton, Gallia County at the time of his death, 21 February 1952. He was buried in Vinton Memorial Cemetery. Anna moved back to Highland County, Ohio and in 1966 was teaching school in Southern Ohio.

          Anna has a stone at the Vinton Memorial Cemetery, but no dates.

21-1-6-2          ZELDA ANNENAH GLENN


Ewing Family Lineage:      Anise-William-George-William-James 


          Zelda was born in Bidwell, Springfield Township on 22 October 1895. She and James Ernest HARTLEY were married 27 November 1913. James was born in 1890 and James died on the 21st February 1953 and was buried in the Vinton Memorial Cemetery, Vinton, Gallia County, Ohio. Zelda's name is on James' headstone, no date. In 1966, Zelda was living in Columbus, Ohio.

          ISSUE:

                        1.    Glenn Ewing HARTLEY, b. 7 Aug 1918. He graduated in Chemistry from Ohio University.. Married: June 1943 to Bernice Sophia KOSLOVSKY. Glenn was a Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany in 1966.

                                      2.    Carolyn Jane HARTLEY, b. 11 Jan 1950

21-2         JOHN R. EWING


Ewing Family Lineage:      George-William-James


          John R. was born 10 April 1832 in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. He married Rachel HAWK on 7 December 1853 in Vinton County, Ohio. Rachel was born in then Gallia County, now Vinton County, 13 July 1829.

          Isaac and Margaret (LOTZ) HAWK of Wilkesville were Rachel's parents. Isaac was a Revolutionary Solider.

          John was a farmer, living at home at the age of 19 in the 1850 census. He was still a farmer in the 1860 census worth $750/150. John died 1 May 1869 of consumption at the age of 37 years, 21 days and was buried in the Ewington Cemetery.

          The 1880 census shows the widow Ewing living in Huntington Township with children Ella and Ben. Rachel did remarried on

17 September 1890 to James T. SMITH. James was born in May of 1836 in Ohio and served during the Civil War. The 1900 census showed that James was a farmer in the Huntington Township area.

          James died 11 August 1915, and Rachel died 15 August 1921 in Ewington and was buried in the Ewington Cemetery as a Ewing.

                        6.    Benjamin Hawk EWING, b. 5 Jan 1867, Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio, d. 2 Nov 1898, 31 years, Buried: Ewington Cemetery. Married: 2 Nov 1898 - 2 hours before he died, Laura WITTENBERG. Benjamin was about to be operated on, he insisted on the wedding, died 2 hours later. She later married his cousin, Fletcher HAWK.

21-2-1      ISAAC LAFAYETTE EWING

          Isaac was born in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio on 24 October 1854.

          Issac's marriage to Louella Salome JONES of Vinton, Ohio, on 24 December 1879 was a double wedding ceremony. Louella's sister, Elizabeth, married his brother George. Louella was born 2 June 1859.

          Louella and Elizabeth were the daughters of Playford and Frances (KERR) JONES. Playford was born in Maryland and Frances was born in Ohio.

          In the 1880 census Isaac and Louella were living in Huntington Township, Gallia County, Ohio.

          In 1900, Issac was the census enumerator. In 1910, census of April 16, Issac was on Wilkesville Road, Huntington Township with Grace, Frances and Louise at home. Louella had died in 1905.

          Isaac died 11 May 1910 and was buried in the Ewington Cemetery with Louella.

          Arthur was born in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio, 27 December 1880. He was married two times. His first wife was Alice Ann CLIFFORD. They were married 15 January 1905. Alice was born 24 December 1884 and died 21 March 1951.

          Arthur's second wife was Della WEISER, it is unknown when they were married or when Della was born. Della died 30 October 1960.

          In 1910, Arthur was a Wilkesville, Ohio farmer. In 1966, Arthur was living in Ithaca, New York.

          ISSUE:

                        1.    Helen A. EWING, b. 28 Aug 1906, Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. Single. 1966: Oak Park, Illinois, social worker.

          Clifford was born 2 November 1908. He and Hazel Virginia KIRK of Ensley, Alabama were married 28 November 1929. Hazel was born 4 February 1910.

21-2-1-2          HATTIE ESTELLE EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Isaac-John-George-William-James


          Hattie was born 13 Jan 1883 Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio, Hattie married Clement C. WILCOX, 29 May 1902. Clement was the son of Alfred and Sarah (LONG) WILCOX.

           Clement, called "Clem," was born 21 June 1881 and died on the 22nd of June 1944. Hattie, she was called "Stella," passed away in 1972. Both Hattie and Clement were buried in the Vinton Memorial Cemetery, Vinton, Ohio.

          In 1910, Clement and Hattie were living with his parents on Keystone Road, Huntington Township. Clement was a farmer near Vinton and was also a rural mail carrier. After Clement's death, Hattie lived with her son, Donald, in Columbus, Ohio.

          Sarah was born in Vinton, Ohio 10 June 1903. She and James L. CLARK were married in the Vinton Methodist Parsonage on the 1st of August 1927. James was the son of James A. and Susan

(MC COY) CLARK, and was born 26 February 1899 in Adams County, Ohio.

          James served in World War I. Both, Sarah and James, were teachers at Vinton, where they met. They retired in 1967 and celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on the 1st of August 1974. In 1981 they were living in Rio Grande, Ohio.

          ADOPTED:

                        1.    Mary Anne (JONES) CLARK, b. 11 March 1933. Married: 25 June 1956, Akron, Ohio, John FOLTZ, son of Ralph M. & Ruth FOLTZ, b. 25 Feb 1933, Bremen, Ohio.

          Grace was born in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. 13 September 1888. James J. MC CORMICK was born 24 February 1877 and died 2 September 1962. They were married 8 September 1914.

          James was involved in farming and timber near Wilkesville, Ohio.

          In 1966, Grace was living in South Charleston, West Virginia and that is where she died 12 October 1980 at the age of 92 years. The service was held at the Blessed Heart Catholic Church in South Charleston and burial was in So. Charleston, West Virginia.

          ISSUE:

           1.     William Earl MC CORMICK, b. 8 Dec 1915. Married: 1 June 1953, Eloise (KINDER) KNOWLES, a widow, b. 27 July 1925. 1966: "Billy" was in the jewelry business w/his brothers in So. Charleston, West Virginia. 1980: survived his mother, lived So. Charleston, W.V.

          Frances was born in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio the 7th of March 1895 and died before her sister, Grace, in 1980. In 1966, Frances was living in Salem, Ohio.

          Frances married Wesley Earle TILTON, 8 October 1916. Wesley was born 18 January 1885 and died 2 August 1962.

          ISSUE:

                        1.    (only): Wesley Ewing/Earle TILTON, JR., b. 29 Aug 1917. Married: 26 Apr 1940, Julia Elizabeth OGDEN, b. 26 Dec 1921, Bridgeton, New Jersey

21-2-1-6          ELLA LOUISE EWING

          Ella was born in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio on

31 January 1901. Ella, called "Louise," married Carney Harold THOMPSON, 2 Aug 1919. Carney died 7 May 1931. Ella married for the second time on 5 September 1934. Her husband was the Reverend Russell Harrison WOLTZ.

          In 1982 Ella and Rev. WOLTZ were living in Wellston, Ohio.

Ella's second husband, Russell WOLTZ, had a daughter, Mary Lenore WOLTZ. Mary, born 20 June 1923, was brought up with Ella's children. She was about the same age as Harry. Mary married Donald Robert SHRADER and in 1982 had three children and the family was living in Zanesville, Ohio.

21-2-2      GEORGE KNOX EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      John-George-William-James


          George was born in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio on

13 November 1857. He and Elizabeth Maria JONES were married in a double ceremony 24 December 1879 - not recorded in the Gallia County records. Elizabeth was born 19 January 1861, the daughter of Playford and Frances (KERR) JONES.

          George Knox was a well-known physician in the Ewington and Vinton areas. In 1880, they were living in Wilkesville with Mary A. BISHOP, age 61, born in Ohio.

          George died 17 August 1918 and Elizabeth died 14 February 1927 and they were both buried in the Ewington Cemetery.

21-2-2-2          EDGAR LOUIS EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      George-John-George-William-James


          Edgar was born in Wilkesville, Gallia County, Ohio the

5 March/April 1882. Edgar was married 30 October 1907 in Middleport, Meigs County, Ohio, to Nora SISSON. Nora was born 13/14 February 1879 to Dr. and Mrs. David SISSON of Middleport.

          Nora died 28/31 May 1941 and was buried in Vinton Memorial Cemetery, Vinton, Ohio.

          On the 16 June 1942, Edgar married Hazel CONNODE/KANODE. Hazel was born 28 December 1890 and died 5 May 1958. It is unknown where Hazel was buried, possibility near Logan, Ohio. Edgar died 25 December 1960 and he was buried in the Vinton Memorial Cemetery at Vinton, Ohio.

          Edgar was the proprietor of a drug store in Logan, Ohio.

          ISSUE:

                        1.    Mary Edna EWING, b. 14 Sept 1908. Married: 26 Aug 1935, George William RAINIER. George was a Registered Pharmacist. 1968: resided Wilmington, Ohio.

21-2-2-2-2       HELEN LENORA EWING

 

EWING FAMLY LINEAGE:  Edgar-George-John-George-William-James


          Helen was born 20 August 1910 and was married to Alexander Douglas MAC MILLAN on 8 November 1930.

          In 1979 they were living in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky.

21-2-2-3          MABEL CLAIR EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      George-John-George-William-James


          Mabel was born 7 March/April 1884 and died 12 March/April 1932 in Monroe, Michigan. She was buried in the Vinton Memorial Cemetery, Vinton, Gallia County, Ohio.

          In Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio on 29 November 1906, Mable and Bundy Butler WILCOX, the brother of Clement WILCOX, were married.

          Bundy was born 17/27 February 1880 and died in 20 December of 1946. He too, is buried in the Vinton Memorial Cemetery.

          Alfred and Sarah (LONG) WILCOX were the parents of Bundy Butler and Clement.

          In 1910, Mabel and Bundy were living on the Jackson to Vinton Road in Huntington Township, Gallia County, Ohio. He was farming.

                        1.     (only). Playford Alfred WILCOX, b. 29 Oct 1914. Married: 1940, Frances FITE. Called "Pip". 1981: Jackson, Gallia County, Ohio. Active in Gallia County Historical Society..

21-2-2-4          GEORGE PLAYFORD EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      George-John-George-William-James


          George Playford was born 23 January 1886 and he died 13 July 1970. He is buried in the Vinton Memorial Cemetery, Vinton, Ohio.

          Esther Jane MATTHEWS, daughter of John R. and Fannie (CARTER) MATTHEWS, his third cousin, were married 20 September 1908. Esther was the great-granddaughter of Abram EWING and the great-granddaughter of Esther Macomber MATTHEWS. Esther was born 11 February 1886. She died 28/29 January 1970 and was buried in Vinton Memorial Cemetery.

          For many years George, Esther and their family were the only Ewings in Huntington Township. In 1910, they were living on Main Street in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. George was a farm laborer.

          Leah was born 20 December 1909. In the late 1920s Leah was married to Theodore FRESHCORN. Theodore was the son of Joseph A. and Hattie FRESHCORN who in 1910, lived on Bidwell Road in Vinton, Ohio.

          Theodore was born in 1906 in Vinton and died 1961. He was buried in Vinton Memorial Cemetery. Leah's second husband was Luke JERMIN. In 1982, there was a L. JERMIN in Columbus, Ohio.

          John George was born 28 June 1912 and on 1 April 1923 was married to Irene SHOEMAKER.

          Irene was said to have been born 6 October 1914, but her tombstone has the date 1916. She is reported to have died 13 August 1950, but again her tombstone has a different date, it says 1949.

          John married for a second time, 24 Oct 1953, this time to a fifth cousin, Verna WELKER. Verna's sister, Susie, married an other cousin, Kelly HUNTLEY. Verna and Susie's parents were Herbert and Garnet (SCOTT) WELKER.

          William P. (it is thought that the P. is for Playford) was born 15 October 1914. William married Kathryn LAMBERT, 10 April 1932. They were divorced 10 October 1937. On 24 May 1943, William married Naomi CASTO, the daughter of William G. and Cora (SMITH) CASTO. Naomi had at least two brothers, John G. CASTO and Charles CASTO. There is record of a Charles CASTO marrying Evelyn MARTINDALE.

           Naomi was born before 1913 in West Virginia and moved to Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio in 1917.

          In 1983 both William and Naomi were retired. William retired from General Motors, and they were living in Columbus, Ohio. William died there in the Riverside Methodist Hospital, 30 November 1984 and was returned to Vinton Memorial Cemetery (Park) for burial. Naomi survived him.

          Frances Lucille was born on the 11 June 1920. She had Willliam ALEXANDER were married on the 21st of October 1939. William was born in 1919 and was the son of Dale and Marie (MATHEWS) ALEXANDER.

          The children of Frances and William were descended from James Ewing - the pioneer, five times.

          Earl was born in Wilkesville, Ohio, 21/31 January 1888. Earl had some type of rheumatism, and it was thought that Florida's climate would help him. His brother Ben traveled to Winter Garden Florida to care for him.

          Earl married Willie Mae CONNELL in Winter Garden on 2 April 1911. Willie Mae was born 3 January 1892 and died 20 November 1966. Earl was 25 years years old when he died on the 2nd of February 1913 in Winter Garden, Florida.

          Willie married again in 1922 to James HARRIS, a long time family friend. They had a child, Nina HARRIS, who married a BENTLEY. James was born 17 March 1889 and died 3 June 1970

                        1.    (only). George Wayne EWING, b. 15 April 1912. Married: 19 Dec 1941, Sarah Ann DYESS. 1966: George was vice-president and general manager, Augusta Lumber Co., Augusta, Georgia.

          Benjamin was born 2 June 1890, and when his brother, Earl went to Florida, it was Ben that traveled with him and took care of him until he married Willie.

          Benjamin married Jessie Rebecca TERRY on 22 December 1914.

Benjamin died in Ocoee, Florida the 8th of December 1971. Jessie was born 7 August 1895 and died in Ocoee, Florida,

          In 1966 Benjamin was retired and living in Orlando, Florida.

          Mary Elizabeth was born in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio,

14 August 1892. Mary was a real family enthusiast and collected material on the George EWING line through-out her adult life. She contributed quite a lot of Ewing information to Donald Brown EWING's book "OUR EWINGS IN AMERICA" published in 1966. Some of Mary's Ewing information found it's way into the 1981 Gallia County History.

          Mary and Joshua Hugh REEVES were married 6 September 1911 in Orlando, Florida. Joshua was born 13 March 1887 and died 7 November 1947. Mary died 3 June 1980 in Orlando, Florida.

          Robert was born in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio,

18 November 1897 and died 25 June 1977 and was buried in the Vinton Memorial Cemetery, Vinton, Ohio.

          Robert joined the N.A. in Gallipolis, 3 October 1918, SATC at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio until his discharge. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Ohio University in 1921 and his M.D. in 1926. He and Louise Raymunda LEPPEK were married, 30 June 1927.

          Louise was born 25 August 1902 and died in Vinton, Ohio on 28 October 1986. Louise was a Registered Nurse, receiving her degree from Mercy School of Nursing.

          Mildred was born 2 July 1899 in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. On the 15 February 1927, she and John Maxwell SCOTT were married.

          John was the son of Emmett and Margaret "Maggie" (MC LEISH) SCOTT. John was born in Ewington 15 August 1895.

          John is credited with the development of the Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando, Florida.

          John died in Orlando, Florida, 11 February 1955, and Mildred died in Orlando on the 27th of March 1966. Both are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery, Orlando, Florida.

          Born in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio, 21 January 1860 - he and Mary Laura CLARK were married 12 August 1885 in Gallia County. Record was found where Mary spelled her name "Marrie." Mary was born in Eureka, Ohio, 23 July 1864.

          Robert and Mary lived at "Calla House" in Ewington. Calla House was the log home of William and Mary Ewing.

          Robert was the superintendent of Gallipolis schools for six years, from 1895 to 1900. They were not located in either the 1900 or 1910 census.

          Robert died in Franklin, Texas 24 February 1930 and is buried in Mound Hill Cemetery, Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio. Mary died 26 November 1956 and is buried with Robert in the Mound Hill Cemetery at Gallipolis, Ohio.

Lulu was the daughter of Francis B. and Sarah (CRABILL) CAMERON. She was born in Columbus, Ohio, 24 January 1888. In 1966, Lulu was living in Lynwood, California.

          Perry Van was born 25 August 1889 in Dallas, Texas and was the twin of Amos Rex. He received a M.S. in 1913 from Ohio State University. In 1946 he was living in Chicago, Illinois and working in the Union Stock Yards office. He was a publisher of breeder publications.

          Perry and Louise Robinson MITCHELL were married on the 27th of August 1913. Louise was born 3 November 1892.

          Perry died in Columbia, Missouri 24 January 1963.

          Donald was the author of "OUR EWINGS IN AMERICA." This book has a lot of information on "our" Ewing family and a complete accounting of Donald's direct lineage - the George EWING family. Donald was living in Pacific Palisades, California in 1968. Donald is thought to have passed away around 1978.

          Donald married Irma Mary KUEKER, 1 September 1920. Irma was born in Fairbault, Minnesota, 10 December 1895. In 1977, the Ewing's were living in Santa Monica. In 1982 no member of this immediate family could be reached.

          Ella was born 19 September 1864 in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. In the 1880 census, Ella was living at home with her widowed mother. On the 25th of December 1883, Ella and Fremont Fordya VALE were married in Gallia County. Fremont was born

14 May 1856 and died 19 February 1928. Ella died 19 August 1905. Both Ella and Fremont are buried in the Ewington Cemetery, Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio.

          Roy was born 18 May 1885 in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. He was a Presbyterian minister, ordained the 29th of May in 1912.

          Roy and Jessie Nannie DOBSON of Limestone, Tennessee were married 17 Oct 1912. Jessie was born 21 August 1884.

          Their daughter, Dorothy, wrote a book about Roy's life, "SAY A GOOD WORD." Roy was listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA - 1930-31. He passed away 3 April 1959 and was buried in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1966, Jessie was a resident in a Baptist home in Zionsville, Indiana.

                        1.    Dorothy May VALE, b. 20 Feb 1916. Married: 1st 18 Dec 1937, Harvey Stowe DURAND II. Harvey served in World War II Divorced, 1 Nov 1949. 21-3         GILBERT ALEXANDER EWING

          Gilbert was born 14 May 1834 in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. He and Mary CHERRINGTON were married 30 Sept 1858. Mary was born in Centreville, Ohio 30 Sept 1838.

          Gilbert Alexander was A.E. EWING's mentor in the "Family Business." Many letters were written by Dr. Gilbert and A.E. exchanging family history and family traditions that had been "handed down" through the years. Because those letters were kept and filed by A.E., and handed down to Nancy Hank EWING - they were available to be used in this Ewing documentary - JAMES EWING - PIONEER.

          In 1850, Gilbert was 16 years old and a farmer, living at home. By 1860, Gilbert was a school teacher, then the war was upon the country. During the Civil War, Gilbert was on the Medical Staff of the 159th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Gilbert had studied medicine under the tutorage of Dr. Ira HOLCOMB.

          Dr. Gilbert was a Huntington Township physician in the 1880 census. He was also the census enumerator. He, Mary and the children moved to Jackson, Ohio when Mary's brother became sheriff.

          Dr. Gilbert died 19 August 1906 and is buried in the Fairmount Cemetery in Jackson, Ohio. Mary died 25 July 1937 and is also buried in the Fairmount Cemetery with Dr. Gilbert.

          Descendants of Dr. Gilbert Alexander EWING are cousins twice over: Mary Cherrington was the daughter of Levi and Permelia (MANNERING) CHERRINGTON; Levi CHERRINGTON was the son of William and Elizabeth CHERRINGTON; William was the son of William and Mary (HANK) CHERRINGTON.

          Ida was born in Ewington, 5 September 1859, and her husband, Robert R. BANE was born 5 September 1855. Ida and Robert were married 20 August 1879. Ida died 6 July 1889 in Columbus, Ohio and Robert died soon after.

          In 1880, Robert and Ida were living with Ida's parents the Gilbert Ewing's. Robert was a listed as a school teacher.

          ISSUE:

                        1.    (only). Jessie Ewing BANE, b. 11 May 1882/84, Columbus, Ohio, d. 10 Feb 1960. Married: 5 Sept 1905, Bertram Shearer STEPHENSON ...The wedding took place on Tuesday, 7 p.m. in the "M.E." Church.. Bertram was the son of Hiram STEPHENSON, b. 24 Oct 1880, d. 11 May 1960. Jessie was raised by grandparents, Gilbert and Mary EWING after the early death of her parents. She attended University of M and was the editor of the campus paper. 1905: Bertram was on staff of Columbus Citizen. 1938: Buffalo, New York, taking care of his company's affairs at North Tonawanda. Apparently no issue.

21-3-2      ULYSSES BROMWELL GRANT EWING

          Ulysses was born during the time of the Civil War, 22 May 1863, in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio. Ulysses married Leni EDWARDS on 4 November 1885 in Jackson County. The Reverend F.S. DAVIS performed the ceremony.

          Leni was born on Sunday, 6 November 1864 at 2:30 a.m., but where she was born was not recorded.

          In the 1880 census, Ulysses was 17 and still living at home. As an adult, he was an optometrist and wrote lots of letters about the family to A.E. EWING.

          Leni died 19 April 1931 at 6:30 a.m. and Ulysses died in the Masonic Home, Franklin, Indiana in 1940.

          Howard's father, Finley, was a former Fish and Game Warden in Jackson, Ohio. Howard was a descendent of the HANK's and CHERRINGTON's making Mary Miller and Howard Cherrington third cousins, once removed.

16 February 1840 and died in San Francisco, California on the 21st of October of 1900. He was married to Minerva FOLSOM, 21 September 1864. Minerva was born in Junior Landing, Scioto County, Ohio, 23 September 1842 and died in Houston, Texas,

          Elmore Ellis served as a Union soldier in the Civil War and suffered a severe wound at Windchester, Virginia. Approximately 1888, Elmore was Department Commander of the Ohio G.A.R. He also authored the book "BUGLES AND BELLS."

21-5-1      JESSIE FOLSOM EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Elmore-George-William-James


          Jessie was born 30 September 1866 and married Horace Alfred STOKES on 21 August 1889. Horace was born 25 June 1863. Horace was Superintendent of Schools in Delaware from 1898 to his death in February of 1904.

          After Horace's death, Jessie went with her mother and four children to homestead in Colorado. She lived in Sidney, Nebraska for a time then moved to Houston, Texas. She died in Houston in September of 1932.

          ISSUE:

21-5-1-1          1.    Elmore Ewing STOKES, b. 20 Apr 1891.

                        2.    Gwendolyn Pursell STOKES, b. 10 Apr 1892. 1966: Washington, D.C.

                        3.    James Stewart STOKES, b. 7 Oct 1894, d. 1 Apr 1966. Married: 26 Dec 1931, Thelma BROTHERS, b. 12 Feb 1903, Gonzales, Texas. Served in World War I. No issue.

21-5-1-1   ELMORE EWING STOKES

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Jessie-Elmore-George-William-James


          Elmore was born 20 April 1891. He and Albino FREEMAN, born 28 September 1893, were married the 4th of August 1919.

          Elmore lived in Houston, Texas and his mother and grandmother went to live with him. Elmore served in the Air Force during World War I.

          ISSUE:

                        1.    Elmore Ewing STOKES, JR., b. 14 Sept 1922. He had a PHD and was a Professor at Texas A & M and single in 1966..

                        2.    Betty Jo STOKES, b. 24 Jan 1928. Married: 3 Aug 1946, F.R. SHEWMAKE.

                        3.    Gwendolyn June STOKES, b. 23 June 1930. Married: 19 May 1956, George Henry PANTILLON, b. Switzerland 1966: Resided, Switzerland .

          Dorothy was born in Delaware, 2 February 1903. Osie THOMPSON and Dorothy were married 15 December 1919. Dorothy died 19 July 1959 and Osie followed in November of 1959.

          ISSUE:

                        1.    Sibyl Elaine THOMPSON, b. 8 Sept 1920. Married: 7 Sept 1947, Dougal POPE.

                        2.    Marilyn Joy THOMPSON, b. 19 Aug 1922, d. 24 Oct 1956. Married: Raymond Douglas HOLDER.
