CHAPTER 19

JACOB EWING

Ewing Family Lineage:      William-James

Jacob was born 17 August 1802 in Bath County, Virginia, which is now Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Jacob and Rebecca MC NEILL, daughter of Enoch and Jane (MOORE) MC NEILL, were married 22 April 1825 by the Reverend William R. GOULD in Gallia County, Ohio. Jacob and Rebecca were first cousins.

Rebecca was born 8 July 1804 in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, which was Bath County, Virginia at the time of her birth.

Census records of Huntington Township, Gallia County, Ohio show that Jacob was a farmer worth $1,200 in 1850.

On the 24 March of 1859 Rebecca died in Ewington, Gallia County, Ohio and was buried in the Ewing Cemetery. Their youngest child at that time was 14 years old.

In October of that year, Jacob left Ewington. At that time Jacob was 57 years old and a widower of 8 months. A letter written by John Ewing HOWELL from Ewington, Ohio to John THOMPSON, 5 miles north of Luray, Clark County, Illinois on 12 November 1859 was found: "Jacob Ewing left here a month ago for Illinois and Missouri. He intends staying all winter. He said he would be at your house as he goes to his brothers (Andrew) in Mercer County and give you the items. We have heard from him once since he left. He was then in Schuyler County, Illinois building chimneys."

U.B.G. EWING wrote: "I remember Uncle Jake visiting Ewington and re-shingling our kitchen."

In 1860, Jacob was in Huntington Township, Gallia County, Ohio living with his son John Leroy EWING. In March of 1864, Jacob had traveled back to Illinois.

On 5 February 1865, Enoch EWING wrote: "I got a letter from my brother, Jacob EWING from Illinois, He wrote he was well. There are 3 of his children with him, Almira, Leroy and King. Almira is teaching school, King is going to school, Leroy, he is the housekeeper. He lives in Hancock County, Ill. James Post Office is his P.O. address. King served 3 years in the Army, came home all right. Jacob wrote that your Uncle Andy had been to see him last March and he had gotten 2 or 3 letters from him since."

The date Jacob and some of his children traveled to Illinois is uncertain. It was after Rebecca died in Ewington, in 1859. Possibly the summer of 1860. Jacob's son William Leander was married in Jackson County, Ohio in 1862, died in Latham, Kansas. Charles and his wife, Angeline, were married

10 years and had 5 children by 1860 - they moved to Illinois. Almira, then 31, went to Illinois. Mary Jane and her husband of 16 years, Warner SPROUSE and their 7 children went to Illinois. Margaret and her husband, John RUSSELL remained behind. Elizabeth and Elijah Alford GRAY, who had been married 4 years with one or two children, moved to Illinois. John Leroy, 24 and James King, 16 went and Jacob was then 58 years old.

In 1870, Jacob was living with Eliza EWING, 32 years, census states she was born 1838 in Ohio. Recorded as "Keeping House." Jacob recorded as being a farmer, $800/200. In 1880, Eliza EWING, found in Pilot Grove, a widow, 41, daughter of Susan LONG, 72, born in Pennsylvania. In the 1870 census, Susan and Adam LONG lived next to Jacob and Eliza Ewing.

Eliza LONG/EWING, another record was found stating she was born 21 September 1839 in Ohio and died 21 June 1882 in Pilot Grove, Hancock County, Illinois. She was 43 years, 9 months at her death. She is buried in the McKay Cemetery, Pilot Grove, Hancock County, near Burnside, Illinois. Her death record said she had consumption 20 years, inflammation of bowels, 21 days. She moved to Illinois in 1854. A note was found that had: Will: son, Philip Douglas LONG.

No record was located of Jacob Ewing marrying again after the death of Rebecca.

Jacob died 25 February 1878 in Hancock County, Illinois and was buried in the McKay Cemetery, Pilot Grove, near Burnside, Illinois. He was 75 years, 5 months and 21 days old at the time of his death.

19-8         JAMES KING EWING

Ewing Family Lineage:      Jacob-William-James

James King was born in Ewington, Huntington Township, Gallia County, Ohio 15 August 1844. His early life was spent on the farm, but he became a skilled carpenter and followed that trade for many years.

He was married 21 December 1876 in Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas by Judge RICHECAM to Mary Salina KINNEY. Mary Salina was born 12 July 1856 in Clinton County, Iowa to Elijah and Sarah Ann (MARSHALL) KINNEY.

James King was a Civil War Soldier for three years, from Ohio. He enlisted at Camp Chase in Company E, 27th Ohio Infantry and Company G, 4th U.S.V. Volunteers. James King's first enlistment was on the 20 July 1861 and he was discharged in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His second enlistment was 11 March 1865 - 12 March 1866, Columbus, Ohio.

James' medical record states that he had Typhoid in 1861 and was in the St. Louis Hospital. In Memphis, Tennessee in 1863 he was treated for exposure and illness from impure water. There was a foot wound near Atlanta, Georgia 22 July 1864, impaired hearing caused by "careless throwing of enemy shells" near Atlanta and on 12 March 1866 in Columbus, Ohio - the same day as his discharge, he fell from a scaffolding.

While James King was serving in the war, his widowed father moved to Hancock County, Illinois and after his Civil War service moved there to be close to his father. James lived in Hancock County, Illinois, August 1866 - March 1871. James King lived from 1871 to 1883 in Reno County, Kansas - but was listed in the 1874 atlas as owning 40 acres in Section 25, Pilot Grove Township, Hancock County, Illinois.

James King had many "incidents and accidents" during the war as well as when he returned to a civilian life. He was in a Rail Road collision in Franklin, Missouri in 1870 - a letter home said that "he was among the debris." In 1876 he was run over by a team in Nickerson, Kansas - where he met and married his wife, Mary SALINA.

He and Mary left Kansas in April of 1883 for the State of Washington. He lived in Port Blakely, Kitsap County, Washington where his sister and brother-in-law, Almira and Henry CLOUD and his nephew, John W. RUSSELL lived.

It was noted that James had another accident - a tree fell on him in Washington State in 1884 and he was said to have heart disease in 1896. His brother-in-law, Henry, wrote about him in 1893 "I find him trying to work but he can't do much of it. From his looks, he's not able." In 1912, James King EWING was living in Seattle, Washington and working as a carpenter.

James lived until the 14 May 1917, when he died at the age of 73 years at his home in Seattle from kidney failure and heart trouble. He was buried at the GAR Cemetery near Seattle under GAR auspices.
