Go to Chapter 13 James Ewing father of Gustavus

            1. Gustavus Henry “Gussie” Ewing {51} was born 16 Aug 1853 in Wilson County, Tennessee. He was the son of James Ewing {31} and Malinda Bellah {44}. Gustavus died 29 Dec 1894 near Richardson, Dallas County, Texas. He married Irene Samantha Williams {1448} 23 Apr 1873 in Tennessee. She was born 20 Apr 1859 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. Irene died 8 May 1928 in Terral, Jefferson County, Oklahoma. In a letter from Loretta D. Davis dated March 1, 1977 she states "I found out Irene Williams that married Gustavus Ewing was an orphan." Loretta indicates "Irene Williams was very tiny when they [her parents] died. Mrs. (Gladys) Puett remembers her and told me some of the story's about those days." She does not give the source for her information.

Known children of Gustavus are:

         2.           i.          Myrtle Helen Ewing {1449}, born 16 Sep 1874 in Wilson County, Tennessee, died 30 Jan 1889.

         3.          ii.          Minnie Ola Ewing {1450}, born 12 Mar 1877, died 2 Jul 1935.

         4.         iii.          Eugene David Ewing {1451}, born 3 Mar 1880, died 10 Apr 1937.

     + 5.        iv.          John Herschel Ewing {1452}, born 13 Aug 1882, died 3 Jan 1926.

     + 6.         v.          Jennie Leona Ewing {1453}, born 9 Apr 1885.

         7.         vi.          Anna Ewing {1454}, born 17 Apr 1888 in Wilson County, Tennessee, died in infancy 7 Oct 1889 in Handly, Tarrant County, Texas.

     + 8.       vii.          Martin Homer Ewing {1455}, born 22 Jan 1891, died 29 Oct 1965.

A grandson of Gustavus, Vernon Ewing, recorded this family in a book From Whence We Came in 1995. The following is taken from Vernon’s book:

“The youngest child of James and Malinda Ewing, born 16 August 1853 when his father was 63 years old was Gustavus, called Gussie. He was my grandfather.

“Gussie was a boy of eight when the Civil War began. My grandmother used to tell us about an incident concerning Gussie hiding in the cellar one day to escape a group of marauding Union soldiers when Gussie, too curious to resist a peek, thrust his head outside to look around. One of the soldiers, probably amused at the sight of this wide-eyed, platinum blond imp yelled, ‘You had better get back into that cellar, you little white-headed devil.’ The soldiers must have chosen to ignore the frightened group in the cellar as they gave them no further trouble.

“Gussie was cared for during his childhood by a negro mammy. Some years after the Civil War, after returning to his old home in Tennessee after a sojourn in Texas, Gussie chanced one day to encounter his old negro mammy on the street. She embraced him with tears in her eyes, calling him her little Gussie.

“A boy could hardly ask for a more congenial place in which to grow up than the countryside around James’s estate on Smith’s Fork. The wooded hillsides must have abounded with game of all sorts for hunting and the rivers and streams were ideal for fishing and swimming. The climate there is very nice. It reminds me of the weather at Camelot as described by the young King Arthur. The summers are seldom very hot and the winters, although sometimes rather severe, do not usually last very long. I like to think that Gussie’s life there, before the war wreaked its vengeance on his family, was happy and carefree.

“On 23 April 1873 Gussie married Irene Samantha Williams in DeKalb County, Tennessee. Irene had just turned 14 years of age when she married. She told us that the reason for her hasty marriage was that Gussie wanted to go to Texas and take her with him. When she tried to put him off, he threatened to go without her. Rather than see him go to Texas alone and probably lose him, she finally relented and consented to marry him.

“I have tried for some time to find the family of Irene Williams. On the census of 1860 for DeKalb County, Tennessee, I found a family that could possibly be hers, but I cannot be certain that it is. The family members were, Andrew Williams, 61; Mercilla, 48; Samuel, 14; Sereptha, 10; and Licurgus, 7. Irene was not listed on this census. Since she was born 20 April 1859 she would have been no more than a year old when the census was taken, but it seems that she should have been on it. The ages of the family members are about as one would expect. I know she had a brother named Licurgus. We used to call him Uncle Curg. I have heard him speak of Irene, my grandmother, as his only sister. In the DeKalb County courthouse I found the marriage record of Licurgus Williams and Alline Malone dated 29 July 1872. If this is the same Licurgus that is listed on the census he would have been 19 or 20 years old when he was married. This seems reasonable enough. I simply submit this record for what it may be worth.

“For all of Gussie’s hurry to move to Texas, he and Irene must have remained in Tennessee almost two years after their marriage, since their first child was born there 16 September 1874. Their second child was born in Kaufman County, Texas, in 1877, therefore they must have moved to Texas between 1874 and 1877. Gussie and Irene had three more children born in Tennessee between 1882 and 1888. The Prosperity Baptist Church records show that Gussie and Irene were given letters of dismissal 7 September 1889. They must have gone back to Texas to live soon after that. According to the church records Malinda, Gussie’s mother, died 10 July 1890. I don’t know whether Gussie and Irene returned to Texas before or after her death, but it is certain that they were in Wise County before 22 January 1891 because their last child was born there on that date.

“Gussie died 29 December 1894 at the age of 41. According to family tradition he died in Dallas County and was buried in or near Grapevine, Texas. I made a search of the cemeteries in that vicinity but was unable to find his grave. The cause of his death, according to family tradition, was cancer. I believe it was a type of skin cancer located on his nose. It is tragic that at that time there was no effective treatment for cancer of any kind. If Gussie had had the benefit of modern methods of treating his type of cancer he might have lived many more years.

“After the death of Gussie, my grandmother Irene was left with seven children to raise, ranging in age from 20 to 3. Myrtle Helen was the oldest and was no doubt a great help to her mother. She was a school teacher and never married. It is almost certain that her salary, meager as it probably was, went to help support the family, whose occupation was farming. I have heard my grandmother say how much it hurt her to see my father, then only twelve or thirteen years old, putting the harness on the big mules and trying to farm the land.

“Myrtle Helen’s death 30 June 1899 must have been a terrible blow to the rest of the family. She was only twenty-four years old but I am sure in many ways head of the family. Her death seems to have come as a result of exposure to cold, rainy weather as she was walking home from school when she was already indisposed. It is saddening to realize that if she could have had the benefit of modern medical attention, she almost certainly would have recovered to live much longer. My grandmother said that Helen had always wanted my father Herschel to get an education. Her untimely death precluded any chance he might have had to realize her ambition for him. Perhaps this experience strengthened his resolve that his own children would have an opportunity to get an education.

“Anna Ewing, sixth child of Gussie and Irene, born 17 April 1888 was only eighteen months old when she died. “

From two additional sources, we can locate the general area in Dallas County where Gus lived when he died. The James William Ewing, Jr. , a nephew of Gus, family records indicates that Gus died in Richardson, Texas. The family records Footnote of Lucinda Clemmons Ewing Kennedy, a half-sister to Gus, says “Gus Ewing buried in Dallas County, near Richardson, Texas.”
