Who is a Ewing?

The EFA is about people with the surname Ewing, but also Ewen, MacEwan, and similar names. We welcome "Ewings" of every background and others who have an interest in our history and genealogy.

Many but not all Ewings trace family history back to Scotland or Ireland, and may identify with Clan Ewing.  EFA has a dual role: a US-based surname society and as a Clan Society.  Scottish or not, all Ewings are welcome at EFA!

What is Clan Ewing?

ewing tartan2Clan Ewing is a Scottish Clan with a long history, though in recent times it has had no Chief.  In 2014, Clan Ewing was newly recognized at the Court of the Lord Lyon with John Thor Ewing as Commander. (The new Clan tartan is above.) View the Clan's web site here.

The Ewing Family Association, while separate from the Clan, operates in close cooperation.

The Ewing Family Association will meet this year in Philadelphia for the 16th Biennial EFA Gathering. We’ll spend time not only in historic Philadelphia, but also in< Greenwich, NJ, home of Thomas Ewing, immigrant Ewing from Ireland. Thomas was father of Maskell and grandfather of Amy Ewing Patterson.

EFA member Bruce Frobes has chronicled Amy’s life and the lives of her family, including husband and director of the U.S. Mint (1806-1824), Robert Patterson.

If you have read the last three issues of the Ewing Family Journal, you’ve been introduced to William Belford Ewing. Family member Grace Ewing Thompson will provide a walk-around of some of the historic homes in Greenwich, which William Belford called home.

Bruce has provided numerous articles for the Ewing Family Journal sharing with us the very special and exceptional life of Amy.

The Philadelphia Gathering is scheduled for Sept. 18-20, 2020. A full schedule and participant pricing will be available March 15 at www.ewingfamilyassociation.org and an application form will accompany the May Issue of the Ewing Family Journal.

Ewing Family Journal

New issues have been added!

The best kept Ewing secret?  Our Ewing Family Journal has been published since our beginning (as Clan Ewing in America) in 1994. Topics include genealogy and family history of many Ewing lines, branching out to topics of historical and social interest to our extended family -- including roots (for some of us) back to Scottish clans and prehistory.  We also have reported on Gatherings and other EFA events.

To see what we have online, consult the Tables of Contents (pdf) file, covering all volumes published to date.  Volumes 12-23 (2006 through May, 2017) are now available for download as full-text PDF files.

Latest News!

For the latest Association news, be sure to check our bi-annual EFA Newsletter.   The latest issue is available here immediately on publication, along with earlier copies.  The Newsletter is distributed to all EFA Members.

The Y-DNA Project

A major activity of the Association is our Y-DNA Project. With Y-DNA, we have found significant genetic relationships among Ewing men, some going well before the time of conventional genealogy and family history. Check our recently revised web pages.

The Warrior Regiment

The Warrior Regiment is an honorary veterans' group within EFA, for those who have faithfully served as veterans of the Armed Forces of the USA. See: Warrior Regiment.
